Matching Men’s Accessories with Your Attire

There are two truisms when discussing men’s accessories for their attire. The first is that accessories are typically the least expensive yet underrated additions to a man’s attire. Secondly, they are usually the most overlooked, if not completely ignored, aspect when it comes to completing your attire. The harsh reality is that nothing adds class and personality to a man’s appearance the way well-chosen accessories do. Unfortunately, very little value is placed on these by men today when they should be realizing that accessories are a statement of their lifestyle, just as their attire is.

Casual versus Formal

Typically, men’s accessories are classified into two categories – Casual and Formal. The casual accessory is one that is worn everyday – e.g. bracelets, necklaces, rings, and watches. There has been a noticeable drop in watch sales due to the advent of cellular phones. But despite this fact, watches are still popular as a men’s accessory. Watches are usually manufactured with leather or metal bands, so make sure it is manufactured with quality materials.

Appropriate pieces of men’s jewelry are extremely difficult to select because they are overshadowed by the abundance of women’s pieces that exist in the market today. Though men’s bracelets and necklaces have their place in a karaoke bar or some trendy nightclub, they have lost their grip in the men’s fashion arena that they once held during the “Disco” Era.

NOTE: The key to purchasing men’s jewelry - younger men should wear silver or white gold whereas the more mature gentleman should lean towards selectiing the more square and traditional yellow gold pieces.

Formal accessories are normally worn with a suit or at least a shirt and tie. These would be pocket squares (the square that is placed in the breast pocket of a suit), tie bars/chains/clips/pins and of course, cufflinks. Silk is usually the fabric of choice when it comes to pocket squares, and can be the icing on the cake, so to speak, with men’s attire.

Tie bars, chains, clips, and pins have been making a comeback recently in the accessory market. Use the same rules on the type of metal as noted above when it comes to selecting these accessories. For a more subdued look, or to just keep the tie in place, wear these a bit lower on the tie. However, if you want to make a statement or portray a bolder look, wear them at a higher position on the tie.

Over the past several years, cufflinks and French cuffs have become amazingly popular in the market. Gentlemen are considered to be much more discerning and high style conscious when enhancing their appearance with this look. Nothing affords you of a more refined yet unique look as a classy, non-garish pair of cufflinks. Although cufflinks should be selected based on the function you are attending as well as your personality type, you should still apply the above rule about what metal to select.
